Question:
Answer:
The Best Nutrients for Eye Health
Your mother may have told you that eating carrots is good for your eyes. While the beta-carotene in carrots may have protective effects, other nutrients appear more helpful in preventing and treating eye problems. I’ll discuss some of them.
Flavonoids. Red and purple fruits and vegetables get their color from a type of antioxidant flavonoids called anthocyanins. They may protect vision by improving blood flow to the eyes and reducing free-radical damage. One such fruit is bilberry: This European cousin of our blueberry shows promise for treating diabetic retinopathy, an eye problem caused by elevated blood sugar, although studies have questioned its ability to improve night vision. Similar flavonoids called proanthocyanidins, found in grape-seed extract and pine-bark extract, may strengthen blood vessels in the eyes. These two extracts have also shown promise for diabetic retinopathy.
How to get: Eat berries, especially blueberries, frequently. Other dietary sources of anthocyanins are cherries, red grapes (and juice and wine made from them), pomegranates and their juice, red cabbage, and beets. If you aren’t getting lots of flavonoids in your diet or if you have diabetic retinopathy, consider taking bilberry, grape-seed extract, or pine-bark extract; follow package directions.
