Lasik.Have you done it?

Question:
I got approved as a candidate for Lasik today. I am scheduled for the end of January. Have you had it done?

1. Did you feel any pain or discomfort at all?
2. Were you given any type of sedative?
3. How does you eye not move at all?
4. How was your vision afterwards?
5. Did you need reading glasses afterwards?
6. For females- how soon did you wear eye makeup afterwards?
7. Did you have any bad complications or side effects?

Thanks in advance- I am a BIG baby!

Answer:
I work at a LASIK center, and have also had it done (a little over 2 years ago).

1. No pain or discomfort. You may feel a little pressure on the eyes but nothing too bothersome.

2. At our center, we offer patients 5-15 mg of Valium to help you relax and also help you sleep after the surgery.

3. The valium helps you relax (like you've had about a drink or so) so your eyes shouldn't be moving too much. On top of that, you probably will be too worried to move them. Depending on what technology used (which laser - it may be a scanning or tracking laser) the laser may track any eye movements.

4. After surgery, your vision may be blurry, you may be dilated for surgery as well. After a nap (a couple of hours, or maybe about 6 hours later) when you wake up, most people notice a difference and it just gets better the next day.

5. Reading glasses are needed for those 40 or older after surgery. Those who are 40 have 2 options when considering LASIK. They can do full distance vision in both eyes, which they will need readers for anything within arm's length. The other option is monovision - one eye (most of the time, the dominant eye) and the other for reading. Which they will not need any readers, but with monovision one loses depth perception.

6. At our office we recommend no eye makeup for 1 week after surgery. After that you can (I did) but the challenging part was not rubbing the eyes while taking it off. (No eye rubbing for 1 month after surgery).

7. I did not have any complications with surgery. You may see halos, glaring and starbursts at night for the first week or two after but they will fade. Common side effects for some people are over or under correction (which they can do a retreatment to fix).

Good luck! Don't worry too much. It's pretty easy (take the valium if your offered some it will definitely help!) You'll love your new vision afterwards, it's like a miracle!
Honey, I have observed a number of Lasik procedures. They flap back a portion of your cornea with a Micro-Keratome. Then they burn out tissue using precise computerized measurements and the laser. Of course it would hurt. So yes, you need a local anesthetic.

They use a prosthetic device to hold the eye open. During which time you are provided with irrigation by the doctor if needed. You should only feel minor discomfort after the proceedure. Lightweight pain killers will keep you happy. You will not need glasses though some people still report needing glasses for close work.

You should not use eye makeup for a period of 48 hours. You will visit your Doc in that time for a follow up. Complications can be stars or halos around light at night. Flashes and other floaters may occur but they are rare.
1) no pain
2) given 5mg Valium (pill)
3) no idea
4) almost perfect
5)I do because I am 50 years old- just need the weakest over the counter reading glasses
6) I waited one week
7) no side effects, no halos, no infection..etc

Worth every penny
Good Luck
both of my parents, and of my 3 of my uncles, have had it and they all came out well..
