Eyeglasses no magnification, to protect eyes from monitor?

Question:
Basically i'm looking for one of these two:

1. Eyeglasses that protect from the monitor but have no vision correction. As i don't need it, is there such a thin? How much would it cost?

2. How much would it cost to just get eyeglasses that have no vision correction? Just plain. Will that mess up my eyesight?

Thanks for the info.

Answer:
Hi, I am trained optically; non prescription glasses are called plano lenses, if you had some of these they would not mess up your eyesight as it is just looking through plain glass. However they would not protect you from the effects of a monitor either - the eye strain experienced cannot be taken away with glass as it is not a physical transparent barrier you need - you are focusing in a completely different way when using a monitor and so nothing can help with this, even those who have prescription glasses to help with monitor use are only correcting the problem, not protecting themselves from further damage.

Most opticians will not sell plano lenses unless one eye needs a prescription and the other doesn't; plano lenses for both eyes are not usually available (I don't know why they are not but I worked for Boots Opticians for a long time and they refused to give plano lenses to people who even offered to pay full price as they wanted them for cosmetic purposes but didn't physically need glasses.)

If plano lenses were available in this way they would still be very costly due to the frame cost and the laboratory making the lenses to fit your chosen frames. But as I say, looking through plain glass will not solve the problem of monitor use on your eyes, nothing can other than trying not to use it too much - glasses are a cure for past damage, not a prevention for future damage.
The thing that makes people eye's go nuts on monitors are two things: the hertz the monitor is putting out related to the light in the room and how the person blinks and sits.
If the hertz are set to 60 and the fluroesent (spelling) lights are always 60, then your eyes will bug out eventually.
If the person takes proper care with how they sit at the screen and not too far away or close, they will not have eye issues. Blinking is self explanatory.
In other words, don't waste your money on those glasses, get a bigger monitor and adjust the hertz on it or change the light bulbs.
you don't need glasses to protect yourself from a monitor the main thing to stop eye strain especially if you use a CRT monitor is to have your refresh rate set high enough it should be set at a least 75Hz to stop flicker if you have a flat screen TFT monitor you don't need to worry about refresh rate because they don't flicker
In answer to your question, there are lenses available without a prscription for computer use. My first suggestion would be to have your eyes examined because a doctor can prescribe a computer Rx which may have some light magnification or not. With a flat screen monitor and no prescription, I don't think I would bother with the glasses. If you use a regular moniter, to offset some of the eyestrain, you can get a lightly tinted gray or brown polarized lens with an anti reflective coating. The polarized tint is for the monitor and the anti reflective coating on the lenses would almost eliminate glare from flourescent lights or any artificial light source. For the cost involved in the glasses without the prescription, I would probably invest in the flat screen.
The answer to your second question, provided they are prescribed by a doctor, glasses will not make your vision worse. It's an aid, it will only help you see better.
Good luck with your decision.
