Bad Vision Anyone?
Question:
Could LASIK entirely cure it? Also, I have a question about LASIK. Let's say my vision is -9.00D (which it is) and a laser that cures up to -7.00 is used on it. Would I be left with -2.00D?
Thank you!
Answer:
The answer to your last question is yes. But my question would be - why would you want to laser to -2 D?
I'm not sure if LASIK is approved for powers of -9 D. You say you are young. This would mean that you have to wait anyway for a stable strength to have any refractive surgery done. Personally, I don't recommend LASIK -especially with your eye strength.
You may want to look into phakic IOLs (Intra ocular lenses.) Remember though that this is an invasive eye operations with all the possible risks and complications.
----
The larger powers tend not to be done because of the amount of corena that will need to be removed. Doing the eye operation twice does not prevent this. Besides, no good eye doctor in the world will cicumvent the restrictions in this way.
If you get it done, then get it done at once. After reading on internet I realize that both LASIK and LASEK is approved for your strength (depending ofcourse of the exact situation). Go to a good clinc and be well informed. It is always good to get a second or a third opinion before you jump in and make your choice.
Good Luck.
The vision is measured when you are wearing your correction, glasses, contacts. If you see well, then you have good vision. You can't say a camera is bad if you don't focus the thing before you take the picture...then complain the camera isn't any good. If your vision is 20/20 or 20/25 or so with your correction, you're ok. These numbers are a measure of 'vision'.
The power, the -9 or -7.00 or? is based on distance from the focusing lens.
The power is equal to one over the distance in meters.
P=1/d
If you couldn't see beyond 1 meter in front of you, or 39 inches or so, you'd get a -1.00 correction.
If you were focused at a half meter, that'd be a -2.00,
a third of a meter, a -3.00...and so on.
You are a -9.00 in one eye, so that's about 1/9 of a meter in front of your eye. A -10 would be a tenth of a meter or 10 cm. An inch is about 2.5 cm, (25.52mm) so you are probably focused very nicely at about 4 inches in front of you. To see further you have to move that focal point OUT, that's what the contacts do, or glasses do.
If you were to get LASEK or one of the refractive surgeries, you'd be corrected most of the way back towards normal. The surgery would 'flatten' the curve of your cornea and make it less powerful.
There are a lot of people who really are glad they chose to do this. I'm not sure I'd go to the one's on the radio, where you have 15 minutes to call for a 'free' exam, and only 10 people will be chosen. Or some radio personality who says they 'trust' this doctor or that...well..really? With this level of myopia, see someone who did a Cornea Fellowship prior to opening their practice.
You'll also need to be cleared by a Retina specialist before your surgery because many high myopes like you have a higher risk for developing a retinal detachment. They'll want to keep a close watch on your eyes.
hope this helps.
I was -9.50 in each eye and has successful treatment in one go at it. I got it done in Scottsdale, AZ by Jay Schwartz at the Schwartz Laser Eye Center. He is the team eye doctor for the local sports teams and I knew 4 or 5 others who went to him. Beacuse my vision was so bad, it did cost more $4000, but they still did it. Don't go to the cheap places that advertise for $250/eye becuase they do not have machines sophisticated enough to work on eye sight as severe as yours. I went to those places first and found out that they have their associates perform the procedure instead of the actual partners which I did not like, and they will not do anything outside of a certain of a certain set of criteria and will reject your case. Also, I don't think you can do it twice. If your eyes are that severe, they burn so much off your corneas and they cannot do a second treatment if the corneas are too thin. Look for someone to do it all at one time that has experience where the laser cures beyond the -7.00. Here's my doctor's website. Maybe they can refer an office in your area. Also, my Mom had it done in one go successfully in La Jolla, CA and she was -14.50 in each eye (yes, bad family genes as far as eye sight goes).
