What do you think of eye Laser Vision Correction? Has anyone done it?
Question:
Answer:
I had my PRK 13 days ago, with a better outcome than I was expecting. I did a lot of researching...the different procedure techniques, risks, benefits, alternatives to the surgery...and researched my surgeon very carefully. I went by experience and education versus price...and feel that my surgeon is the best in my area on account of where he got his education, the length of time he has been performing LVC, and what his focus of the eye is. The link below takes to you a list of the surgeries matching them to the technologies that are available...and that is one of my research sources that I use for my job in an ophthalmology office...probably the best one for the non-ophthalmology professional...written in an easy to understand format...a little technical...but very good in my opinion.
If you haven't already, get a consultation to find out about your individual situation with your eyes...we're all different and I can only say that I'm very happy with my results...others probably aren't so happy...but going from worse than 20/400 to 20/30 in one eye and 20/20 in the other...I'm happy with this if I do not improve any more at all. I went in just hoping for legal to drive vision (20/40 without correction in most states)...and I've already surpassed that...and I know I'll need reading glasses at some point in the future, another definite no big deal thing for me. Others may consider that not good enough and if they had these same results as I have, they may not be satisfied...the other thing to consider is that I know I am still healing...for PRK can take 4-6 weeks to get closer to the best results...and some people heal even more slowly and their vision reaches it's best in time frames up to six months to a year. My husband was told that he should get his maximal improvement by postop month three for his LASIK...he's 1/3 of the way there and already 20/20 and 20/15...but he always heals fast...from everything.
Whether or not laser eye surgery is a good idea for you depends upon your unique situation, your expectations, and the probability that you will attain those expectations. Lasik is very much a personal decision.
I work for a nonprofit organization that certifies Lasik doctor patient outcomes. We don't provide Lasik, just Lasik information and certification.
Talking to others is a good way to learn what laser eye surgery is like, but a very poor way to get learn if laser eye surgery is appropriate for you. Everyone's eyes are unique. You would not put in your friend's contact lenses and expect to see well. Neither can you expect the same result another has received (good or bad).
What you need is a comprehensive examination from a competent eye doctor to determine what, if anything, may be appropriate for you.
I had lasik done five years ago ,I was 21.Great outcome!! My vision was so bad I could not drive or see anythinIg without glasses. Now I do not need any glasses or lenses!! I paid about 1600,but it was 5 years ago, I am sure the prices has changed by now and techology also.I was so happy by doing it ,my whole world has changed for me in my eyes.I think its worth it.
I had LASIK done in 1999, and as far as I'm concerned, that's the best way I could have spent $3,500! I could not wear glasses without getting terrible headaches, and contacts were getting harder and harder to tolerate (especially since at the time I lived in a desert environment). Worse yet, I could only wear my contacts for about 12 hours before my vision would deteriorate.
I was scared to death to have it done, but hating life as-is, so I went for it. BTW, if you do decide to go for it, and you are even the least bit worried about being freaked out during the procedure, be sure you ask for and take the sedatives they give you - I'm glad I did. But now I've gone from about 20/300 in my "good" eye to 20/15 with both eyes now. Eight years later and my eyes are just as sharp as they were after the surgery. There's nothing like looking around familiar places and seeing stuff you never could see - even with glasses or contacts. I felt like I went from a regular tv set to a high-definition set! To this day I appreciate being able to see, and see very well - and I have no regrets at all about having the surgery.
But bear in mind that you may not get perfect results - I was near-sighted, and not severely so, which is the easiest to treat. Beware of any place that claims to gaurantee results. I had mine done at a clinic specializing in the procedure, and they simply said that "most" of their patients achieved vision good enough to drive without correction (which is 20/40 or better here in the US).
