You could earn more than in a savings account with mutual funds and stock however those assets are not guaranteed. You can either gain alot or lose money. It depends on how aggressive the funds are.
I would recommend the online savings account ING direct. which is currently 4.5% and is FDIC insured. If you are interested in opening an account let me know you may be able to get and additional $25 just for opening the account.
There is no account that I know of that offers a guaranteed 12% You would have to look at stocks and mutual funds for that possible rate.
There is no instrument you can purchase that makes 12% interest.
Actually, you could probably find some junk bonds that pay 12% interest. But those have a relatively high default rate and you risk losing your entire investment.
For a safe high interest investment, an internet savings account or CD would be your best bet. The better ones are paying over 5% right now.
Can you get a better return with mutual funds? It's very possible, depending on your time horizon. Stocks average around 10% per year, and over the long term (say, at least 10 years) your odds are pretty good of accomplishing that. However, for the short term, stocks are a gamble and you could easily lose money. Therefore, if you'll need this money within a couple years or so, you should stick to safe investments like high-interest savings accounts & CDs.
