Question:
I am retired and no longer play stock market. I would like to sell 100 shares AT&T without opening a stock broker account. Just turn in certificate and mail me the check.
Answer:
Can't be done. You can open an account, sell the stock, and close the account immediately. I did once. In theory, you could arrange a private sale, but by the time the certificate the appropriate agency to have it reissued to the buyer and fees are paid, you will have spent more than just opening a brokerage account for the sole purpose of selling the stock.
You can send your shares to my broker and he will sell them and send me the money and then I can write you a check.
