Any adice in legal aid in the uk?

Question:
I used to work for the training arm of a company which was sold last year, the sale was completed without any prior notification, in fact we all woke up one morning to an email telling us the stock maket would be told that morning. Recently there where two payments made in to my bank account from my old employer, this happened to all of us and we assumed it was a severance/redundancy payment. It turns out that it was a mistake and the old company now want this back as they had outsourced payroll to another co who made the mistake, i didnt authorise them to give my details to anyone else and i have a few other issues with them, does anybody know the structure in the uk for legal aid as im not a well off person i support my 2 disabled parents and sister but feel aggrieved that this situation has happend

Answer:
If the payments have been made to you in error, then you have to give them back, otherwise this is theft.
What other issues do you have with your old employer? If you left more than 3 mths ago, its now too late to take action under the Employment Act, although you would be entitled to redundancy if you worked for them for more than 2 yrs. If the company went bust, the Government has a compensation scheme to pay your redundancy.
I think you need to go and see the CAB for initial advice on your issues - they are free and impartial.
EDIT: Many companies have outside payroll bureau to run their payrolls for them - as long as the info they were given was only to enable them to pay the staff and was only used for that purpose, then there is no breach of data protection law.

You will be entitled to Legal Help if you earn under roughly around £12,000 - £13,000 per year and obviously if you have children this will be taken into account.
If the matter proceeds to the Court that's when you will apply for Legal Aid, which generally speaking, if you have been accepted for Legal Help you should be accepted for Legal Aid.
If you are not able to get any of the above most Solicitors do have a Special Rate for people just outside the boundaries of Legal Help/Legal Aid.
Hope this helps!
