I have a 403b account. Can it be used to buy individual stocks or just mutual funds ?

These types of investments, like 401ks, are typically controlled by a fund manager. They like to keep these investments "safe" and don't offer individual stocks as investments, as it is very risky to invest in just one stock. The mutual funds spread the risk, so it's a safer investment. If you want to invest in a stock, which i don't recommed, save up some money and invest in that stock. Don't gamble with your retirement funds. Good Luck!

When it comes to retirement accounts, often times it is the limitations of the investment firm, not the IRS, that restricts you.
Legally, yes you can invest in individual stocks within any company-sponsored retirement account, like a 403(b). However, your company's plan may not even offer individual stocks.
IMO, you should only own mutual funds for retirement purposes. Individual stocks carry too much isolated risk. Your retirement accounts are for creating a secure financial retirement, not "getting rich". Remember the Enron employees who had much of their 401(k) in Enron's stock? They lost most of their nest-egg.

Probably not. most of these are sold by insurance agents and are annuity products. A common name for 403b are TSA's --tax sheltered annuities. ask your employer for a copy of the SPD. You should be able to change your investment elections, ask for the form to change your allocation. That will/should have the available options in your plan.
