Why wont my computer log on to secure servers anymore?!?

Question:
My computer will no longer log into secure servers like my stock account, but will log into sites like ebay. A week ago it worked fine, now it doesnt. Everything else seem fine. Ran spyware, virus scan, etc. but turned up nothing.

Answer:
Secure sites (at least those using SSL or TLS for security) require a current certificate (usually on both ends). If one has expired, this may be causing your trouble. Look in your browser's security settings for certificates (not in the same place in all browsers) and look them over. Perhaps you will have to download an current one from your brwoser supplier (generally, if needed, included in updates). Ask 'em after you've looked into the certificate situation.

Or, if you haven't done anything, some program (virus etc) might have. Do you regulalry run a good anitvirus program? If not, do so. aVG and Avast are well regarded among the no cost ones. don't just assume that nothing found is what's actually so. For a considerable time (till later 2005), the major antivirus companies did not report the Sony/BMG rootkit 'DRM' (loaded when certain Sony music CDs were played on a computer) as a virus. Despite the major vulnerabiliyt it introduced.

Or perhaps security settings (in a firewall on your computer, on your ISP's computer, etc or in a traffic filtering program -- eg, spam filtering) have gotten changed. Again, possibly by malware. If the secured sites have been added to a ''block list' (or black list), that might account for the observed behavior.

If you're using Windows you might be able to go back to a previous restore point, before this started behaving. Not something I'd recommend as there is much not under your control here, but ...

Another possiiblity is that your computer has been zombified, perhaps by a spam artist, and having been identified as a source of spam (or some other noxious stuff), you may have been added to a black list here or there. You'll have to ask your ISP if something along these lines is going on. But, beware, the first thing their tech folk will undoubtedly do is to insist it's your problem and you should reload all your software, or even reformat your hard disk as a first step. If your machien isn't causing the trouble, this will be a waste of time. The problem is having any idea whether your machine is or not; their advice is, to that extent, not unreasonable. It'll take you a while, and be pretty unnerving.

BUT before you do any such thing, make sure you've backed up everything you created (papers, etc) and everything it would be difficult to reinstall, BEFORE you do anything. Some or all of that stuff is likely to be very hard or impossible to recreate. Make sure any backup you make (probably on a CD or some such) is actually good and fully readable, before you proceed with anything. CHECK, do not merely assume if the correct directory entry is ther, all is well.

Not an easy thing to diagnose at a distance. Do all you can to figure it out before you start calling tech support departments (some of them charge). And keep very good and orderly and readable records. If you call, at least you'll be able to say I did this and tried that. Maybe they won't try to get you to
did you change your browser's security level?
see that in internet options->advanced u have the required protocol enabled, like ssl, lts etc. plus check if the site's certificate is invalid, high security settings tend to disallow sites with invalid certificates. u can change this to prompt.
