In your experience, which degree is more transferable?
Question:
Note: Transferable, meaning that I am able to switch jobs without too many difficulties holding me back.
Answer:
Economics is definitely more transferable as a first degree because it gives you more of the broad skills that all employers value like analytical & reasoning ability and problem-solving skills. You also learn more about the factors that affect the economy and that affect the prices of stocks and bonds (a lot of finance theory is based on economic theory these days). Accounting is pretty specialized, and although I agree that accounting harder to pick up if you haven't seen it in in school, you would probably be better prepared for the jobs that you want at investment firms if you had a broader economics education than if you had more specific accounting training.
both study route are good.
my advice: contact some companies you think you would like to work with and check with them what they would look for. you may want to consider a degree in financial services instead. start with either accounting or economics and specialise in Financial services. to work as an accountant, you will need a professional designation (in Canada, these are CGA, CMA or CA). and an accounting degree is the best route!
