How well do you plan for your future?

Question:
Take my family for example: my parents have no retirement funds, no IRA's, no stocks/bonds, just a checking/savings account and living one paycheck at a time while my dad nears 60 and he still works. I pay for all of my tuition bills/living expenses. Am I the only one seeing a problem here? I have other siblings, but why is OK in a parent's mind to assume that your children will take care of you when you get older? Is this a religious thing? Am I missing something?

Anyway, I am a huge believer in family and financial planning, and I know EXACTLY what I will be doing in the next 10 years. I just think there should more emphasis placed in planning for your personal and career life.
where they educated about those sort of things? that might aslo be the issue .i think it is kind of hard to have that much pressure put on you, where it seems you are meant to look after them as payback for all those years they raised you and did everything for you. but then again, they had to coz you didnt ask them to bring you into the world. yes, you can only look out for them as loved ones, coz i cant imagine you leaving your parents in poverty. but at least we learn from our parents mistakes, their lives are a bench mark to our own futures. where they went wrong we try to not and where they failed we try to achieve... but i hope you all the best for future, i'm sure you will succeed in everything you embark upon
Hello,
it sound like you have you work cut out for you..
seriously, its not just you or you parents, its everyone and their parents. I know the government has lots to do with this issue but its mostly because of lack of planning, every generation is different and in some cases like my parents, I chose to look at the sacrifices they made throughout to raise me and my siblings and I almost believe that if they really had enough to guaranteer my future, they would. at this point all you can do is to do better with your kids, thats what I'm doing, for your parents, find out whats out there for you to minimize the cost of what you gonna have to pay for them and be prepared. in some ways, God will pay you back. good luck!
I see. you sound to good to be true I would love to help you plan for the future. I use a planner and my calender on the wall does that count?? I place events in my cell phone so I can remember to do them, and I am only 24 years old but I have already made a will (just in case) and I have 2 life insurance's..(I have a 3 year old son, and I am a single mother so I want to make sure that he will be taken care of if something should happen to me) I have even set up who will get gaurdianship of my son and what will happen to my animals..well good luck with your family..
