How can I invest in stocks? Do I just open an account with a trading company? I don't want a broker.?

Question:
Do I open an account with ameritrade? How does that work? Is there a monthly fee? (Whats the general fees) Am I charged by trade? What if I only buy two stocks?

Answer:
Open an Account on www.ameritrade.com
Next you wire some money into that new account. This will usually take a couple of days.
You are charged per trade. A trade is approx. $12. You can buy as many shares as you like. Usually people buy in lots off 100.
Open a brokerage account at Fidelity.com, deposit about $2500, and have them transfer some fixed amount ($100) a month from your bank account to your brokerage account. If you are young, make it a Roth IRA. If you are really, young, you can retire early. Wish I had started mine 15 year's earlier than I did. Why Fidelity - their web site rocks when trying to study funds and investments.
If you want to buy stocks without a broker you should investigate DRIP> This stands for Dividend Reinvestment Plans. Certain companies will allow you to purchase stock directly from the company 2without using a broker, These companies pay dividends that you reinvest to buy more shares. You can check sites such as Motley Fool or type drip in a search bar for more info. and Good Luck!
The reason for going with an online brokerage firm (like Fidelity) is that you have the ability to have all your stocks in one place, while getting research and great tools to help with choosing even more stocks. Going with a DRIP plan can seem attractive, but to get a well-diversified portfolio you have to set up relationships with a LOT of companies-why not go through a regular online/discount broker? They don't have anywhere near the cost of a full-service (cost) broker.
