After the prototype is complete, how do I get a patent on my invention?

Question:
This invention is of a mechanical nature. Add ons and improvments on exsisting products.

Answer:
Patents are very expensive - there is a long process you have to go through. You have to pay the patent office several thousand dollars just to research your product, to make sure it is not too similar to anything already patented. If it is an improvement on an already patented product, you may have a problem - it may not qualify for its own separate patent. Beware of places that claim to handle the paperwork for you - I saw an expose on TV, where they took your money and did nothing for you. Be sure to go with a reputable firm. If you are approved for a patent, it costs around $20,000 to obtain. (At least that is what I heard secondhand from someone who was looking into it). It is definitely expensive.
