Why is a tampon called a "tampon"? do you tamp it on? was it the name of the inventor? what?

The invention of the tampon is credited to Dr. Earle Haas although historians believe that the idea has been around for thousands of years.

As for why the name is 'tampon' I really do not know. I suppose it just sounds better than calling it 'bloodplug' or something equally tacky.
