Website invention?

Question: If I came up with a unique website, for example, say I was the first person to come up with an auction website such as the Ebay there is today, is it possible to patent that or is there no way to patent that? I ask because I see similar auction websites out there. I know Friendster has a patent on social networking. I don't understand how that is possible. Social networking sites are everywhere. Does anybody know if it is possible to claim a patent on a website invention such as an auction website (ie. Ebay)?
