How do I patent a concept --?

Question:
I can only provide a layman's explanation of the device to-be-invented, but I have an idea that will be extremely useful to people in my field, and I would like to stake my claim and open it up to inventors and promotors, if that's possible. Is it? Where can I gather concise info on patent law to study at home?

Answer:
Getting a patent is not an easy job. Do not disclose your invention to anybody. You have to provide the patent office with full particulars of your invention (layman's explaination will not do) You have to be very careful in framing your "claims" of the patent and "disclaimers" as well. There is ample material on the internet to search from. I would suggest you to begin from the USPTO's website. FYI self mailing (as answered by my fellow answerer) is risky and no more recognized.

yes floating point amplier was a concept it was patented whenTexas Instruments got it to work in their seismic equipment, they had to pay a royalty to the company that concieved the idea even though they could not make it work.
you use to be able to copyright it send to yourself in mail so it can be dated by the post mark and do not open it. Then find a patent attorney to assist with the filing. Anyway protect your idea as you need to before discussing it with anyone..
