The history of computers goes back a long way to the assistive devices used by the ancients to track complex mathematical calculations using beads, stones, knotted rope, or other small objects.
In more recent times, "computers" as we know them to be - large semi-automated or automated calculating devices, came into being first as complex thought experiments and then large mechanically-driven devices before the inventions of vaccum tubes and transistors.
Much of what we think of as computers traces back to the designs of Charles Babbage's "Difference Engine" in 1822 and the second version by the same name (which was never built.)
In more modern times, the forefathers of what we're using today are the famous ENIAC and UNIVAC in the mid-twentith century.
