There needs to be a search of the records to ensure you idea is unique and not a simple variation of someone else work. Assuming it is unique, they you file for the patent number or copyright and wait for an OK and number.
You now have intellectual property. Most of the big boys like Microsoft and Apple have attorneys monitoring the new stuff and may approach you, it they are interested. If they don't come to you, then approach them.
