The most important invention in history, bar none, was the printing press. Of course, it wasn't patented, but that doesn't change the fact that it did more than any other invention to change the way & course of life.
Obviously it is "electricity", can you imagine the world with out electricity. Still humans would have been in stone age.
The printed word.
Books are written , people read them.
Well Electricity might be good, But can you imagine people without cell phones!! lol!! Seems everyone has one glued to there head these days.
So with that, I vote for the telephone. Only because im sure a lot of cell phone users (if given the choice Phone or Electricity) would choose Cell phone.as they burned wood in there house for light. :)

Without an understanding of atomic theory, or quantum physicas, the mear notion of electricity would have never even existed!
Even before THAT.. philosophers like Socrates, Plato and many others worthy of mention, postulated the early theories that life was made of matter and that forces existed, including magnetism an early discovery which is instrumental in creation of modern day electronics and in some cases electrity.
But those were never patented, or records simply no longer exist, lost in time.
i would have to say vaccines (medicine) there would have been alot more death and disease without this technology!!
