For all you 80's babies?
Question:
In the 60's, 70's and early 80's probably shouldn't have survived, because ...
Our baby cots were covered with brightly coloured lead-based paint which
Was promptly chewed and licked.
We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, or latches on doors or
cabinets and it was fine to play with pans.
When we rode our bikes, we wore no helmets, just flip flops and fluorescent
clackers' on our wheels. (I think you will find they were known as spokey
dokeys - some old git wrote this)
As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or airbags and riding
in the passenger seat was a treat.
We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle and it tasted the
same.
We ate chips, bread and butter pudding and drank fizzy pop with Sugar in
it,
but we were never overweight because we were always outside playing.
We shared one drink with four friends, from one bottle or can and no-one
actually died from this.
We would spend hours building go-carts out of scraps and then went top
speed
down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into
stinging nettles a few times, we learned to solve the problem.
We would leave home in the morning and could play all day, as long as we
Were back before it got dark. No one was able to reach us and no one minded.
We did not have Play stations or X-Boxes, no video games at all.
No 99 channels on TV, no videotape movies, no surround sound, no mobile
phones, no personal computers, no Internet chat rooms.
We had friends, we went outside and found them.
We played elastics and street rounders, and sometimes that ball really
hurt.
We fell out of trees, got cut and broke bones but there were no lawsuits.
We had full on fist fights but no prosecution followed from other parents.
We played knock-down-ginger and were afraid of the owners catching us.
We walked to friend's homes.
We also, believe it or not, WALKED to school; we didn't rely on mummy or
daddy to drive us to school, which was just round the corner.
We made up games with sticks and tennis balls.
We rode bikes in packs of 7 and wore our coats by only the hood.
The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke a law was unheard of. They
actually sided with the law.
This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers and problem
solvers and inventors, ever. The past 50 years have been an explosion of
innovation and new ideas.
We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to
deal with it all.
And if you're one of them. Congratulations!
Answer:
I remember walking all over town, even after dark, and never being afraid..today I won't even let my kids walk the dog around the block after dark..
Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
how did we do it...
oh, I can't wait for part 2...
And we had to live without Justin Timberlake.
How did we cope?
*does the my generation was luckier then yours dance*
aka the robot!
Sooooo looking forward to the sequel!
This is so true, it's scary!
i think the main reson we all survived was that there was no blasted nanny state. thanks so much blair
Sometimes I miss these days.so simple & carefree.then.....
I grew up...& technology advanced.I still try to encourage my kid to do some of the things I did as kid.mostly going outside to play..
If things could be this simple again...do you think todays kids could survive without all the spoils life has to offer them now?
Highly doubt it...
Yep and Halloween was the best. We would go out with our pillow cases for blocks and blocks and blocks and no one worried about us. . . but the parents did get first choice of the chocolate (to make sure it was safe for us to eat). . . .those were the days. I don't know how we did survive it.
I was a kid in the early 80's and this is pretty accurate except for a few things. We did have video games; I had an Atari and I remember pong before that. They had VCR's too, they came out in the 70's on a widescale. I think my family got our first VCR around 1983. I did not walk to school, I had to ride a school bus. I lived in a rural area, and no one walked to school. We did have cable, but there were only 13 channels. My friends and I would have laughed at anyone riding a bike with a helmet. I don't remember anything about obesity reports for kids. The only warnings I got about junk food was that it rotted your teeth. I remember not riding in cars with seat belts. In fact I remember riding in the cargo area behind the back seat of the family station wagon on long trips.
gosh that is how it was for me! ahh my kids have a fit if the cable goes out and dont know what to do!!
Wow, now you put it like that..
I also cleaned my room myself - because it was MINE
Did a paper round to pay for my dog ( and did everything for him myself)
fixed my own bike
Bwooooon, whoop there it is!!! lol x
