What hi-tech product ideas interest you?

Question:

My partner and I are interested in building a a company like Sharper Image, except I don't want cheap products. I also want low cost products for the consumers, and since you are a consumer, what are some ideas of technology that would be helpful to you? Also, does anyone know who to talk to to get my products manufactured? We already have over 50 ideas, but we're still in the process of everything. If you can help me get started I would be happy to give you best answer and money!!

I like and buy everything

Convergent devices, that have several functions...such as smart phones (pda, camera, phone, internet).

No to burst your bubble, but manufacturing a hi-tech gadget here in the US and making money is next to impossible. Your best bet is to do some traveling and find some cool stuff overseas. Japan, Hong Kong, Mainland China, and Germany are good starting points.

Starting a good Import business will be more profitable and you can still sell some really cool Hi-Tech stuff. I find cool things in Japan and Germany all the time.

If you are bent on making something yourself, be sure to do a good patent search first (there are plenty of places online to do that). That way you can be sure you are not setting up a facility for someone else.

Don't get me wrong, there are a few companies here in the US that have don quite well and even a few that have started recently. I have worked for several companies in the past and currently own my own. I do a crap load of work for what all too often seems like very little return.

I have my BS in electronics and computer science, my MBA, and a PhD in physics. I have several US and foreign patents and have made some really cool gadgets. One of which is in many automobiles on the road today... Am I a multimillionaire? Nope.

I find I make more money improving on other designs and selling to niche markets.

What are some of the things people are interested in? I'm sure you've considered that. Here are my thoughts.

Pets: People LOVE their animals and will buy things for them
Kids: Parents love to buy "toys" for their kids they can play with.
Cooking: People love kitchen gadgets that are hi-tech
Health: Hi tech work out, weight loss things
Computers and other gadgets of that nature.
Cars: Thats a big one.
Cleaning things: People are lazy and want fast ways to clean.

Now, put a few of these together for hi tech ideas, such as Pets & Cars. Safety devices for pets when in the car. Pet "carseats"
Kid & Cooking. Kid safe cookware, so kids can help in the kitchen.

You get the idea. :-)
