Do you work and go to college at the same time? How do you do it?
Question:
Many people have told me that they have paid their own way through school by working and going to college at the same time.
How do you do it? What is your time schedule like? Are you a full-time student and working full-time as well or what is your combination? Please help.
Answer:
I've gone to college full time and worked part time, worked full time and gone to college part time (while I had small children), and most recently, worked full time and done an accelerated night college program (MBA in 2 years, no less).
The first two scenarios are easier. The important thing to learn is time management. If you can juggle your responsibilities and still have a little time for rest & relaxation, you'll have acquired a very valuable skill for your career.
You will definitely have less free time and you'll need to realize that up front. It is vital to build homework and study time into your schedule. As a full time student, I scheduled my courses for two or three days during the week and worked as a teller two or three days a week. I wrote papers on the weekends, did homework as I got it or the evenings I had no school.
Luckily, you can do a lot of the library and research work from your computer at home. That saved my life for the MBA program. Full time/full time is definitely not for the faint of heart. I had to put in 20 hours other than my class and study group (4 hours each) every week. I had a long commute (120 miles a day) so I just had to do with less sleep. I took care of alot of personal business during the commute, such as paying bills by phone, etc. and also online. The Internet is a real God send.
Hope this helps.
Honey, I worked througout college and my advise is to contact your uni's career center for on campus positions (if you're lucky/good, maybe get a job within your dept/college). The reason for this is that on campus jobs will respect your class schedule and be VERY lenient for when need to take off to study, etc. Plus u don't have to work weekends. The down side is that on campus jobs are restricted generally to 20hrs a week.
Everyone's experience is somewhat different. There are a limited number of hours in the day.
You have to set priorities and decide that some activities are not important for the here and now, and must be postponed.
I worked a 50 hr per week job and went to college at night for nine years until I completed my MBA. Yes, I had no one to pay my way, had to take a school loan and do without things I wanted but did not need.
I stayed motivated by putting the school's sticker on my car's rear window, so that I would continually remind myself while driving that the education was my immediate goal.
Stay with it & good luck!
look at my profile and join these sites for free. then recruit others on campus to work for under you to get bonuses. you can easily earn extra income for partying or studying!!!!1
these sites allow you to work 10 minutes in between class or for hours at a time. good luck.
Yes I did this for a year, a few years ago, worked full time, did part time college, and manged to pass the diploma with high marks at the end of the year.
I also had a family at home, but I focused on my college work and thought that it was only for a period of time, and that helped me through. It's called mind over matter - just go for it.
I worked full time and went to school part time. I tried a full time load and it damn near killed me.
Having an understanding employer helps.
I work 3 jobs and am a full time student at a 30,000/yr liberal arts school. I am working with the school as a full time Resident Computer Consultant (the resident computer fix it guy) and have been for 3 years. I also work at a huge electronic solutions center about 30 hours / week. I also work "at home" at night. I could just dump the other jobs and work at home but like you, I don't have loads of time to utilize. My suggestion for you is this: Don't worry about working a 9-5 job (because obviously you can't.) If you want to start making some income while being at school without a huge time committment, my suggestion for you would be to look at http://www.mittenstate.ws This will allow you the opportunity to work when and how long you work. Even though, I would hardly call it work. It is more of a hobby with rewards for me, but you could do it "part time" (maybe an hour or two a day) and start building your income. It won't be a fast process and it won't happen overnight. Keep in mind the amount of time you put in is directly related to what you get out of it. It won't be much at first, but if you give it enough time to develop, which I imagine you will, you will do well within a couple of months with a very small time requirement. Set yourself up now for the near future. Don't wait.
IM me on Yahoo Messenger: Zathrak_GDI and I can try to make this a bit clearer for you. If anyone else is having the same inquiry, feel free to message me as well.
nope not there yet =D
I worked while going to University. It was a part time job which allowed me to work the hours which would suit my timetable.
Full time hours are too structured. Part time allows you to be more flexible in choosing the hours. It did not necessarily pay my way through University but it did help with costs.
I knew students who worked in adult establishments who did pay their debts off and quit once they graduated. Many intersting stories from them.
Well you should find a job that will be flexible like a in-bound call center so you could do homework and study. Most of the time they are flexible about school plus its not a hard job. I'm a full time student I go to college at night and have a full time job from 6:00 am to 3:00pm its a call center so I like this job cause they are so cool about that. Im sure you could do that and have some extra cash.
At present I am a full time employee working 36-48 hrs a week and I am also a part time student(9 credit hours) it's going to take me about 3 years to get a 2 year degree, but in the long run it will be worth it. There are many times you will have to give up weekend parties and fun because work or school comes first. But once you get that degree and corner office, the play time will be enjoyed that much more. Even if you have to downsize the amount of courses, don't give up, keep your eye on what's important.
it's all abotu organizing your time to do stuff. i made my classe so that i ony had school on tuesdays and thursdays (i go from 9am-9pm on those days), then i work the rest of the time.
i found that getting a planner helped me organize my time and what to do and when to do it, so i'm never too rushed with my work and i keep on top of it all better.
I currently go to College full time and work from home. If you want the same opportunity, click the link below and follow the steps. It is so simple and you can make excellent income just working Part-Time. The best part is you get paid daily! Make sure you watch a 27-minute business overview of the company and services. This will answer all your questions. Hope to hear back from you. Let me know what you think.

I did school full time and worked part time, but I do know people who worked full time too...its very possible, its not easy but it's not way hard either. You just have to be dedicated thats all...if you want to party too much or socialize too much then you will have a problem, but if your goal is finishing school and getting paid by working, there is enough time to do it all.
I work full time and go to school part time. Plus I have a child, volunteer for the Jaycees(was a board memeber for a while), and am getting married soon.
It's amazing how much time a person actually has in one day. It's just a matter of taking advantage of the time you have. See the link for the calculator below.
I would work on school work during my hour lunch and if I had any down time during the day. I aslo take online courses whenever I can. I set aside time to study and read when I am more alert. I'm a morning person, so a couple of hours every morning on the weekend, before the rest of the family gets up, I do most of my school work and reading.
I still find plenty of time to run and participate in Jaycee events and spend time with my family. I even find time for myself in there.
I do it is very hard but my work will eventually pay off i have a full time hospital job and go to school at night full time Very stressful and I lose sleep to...
I just started this internet job its pretty cool check it out you can make some extra cash :)
