Question:
Hi! This is my issue: My parents are taking a sabbatical year and are going to work in The Netherlands and the whole family is going(my sister and I), i'm undergraduate in college(sophomore) and my sister also (senior) but she was able to get a scholarship and she's going to finish college ther that year but in my school i asked for scholarships or programs to study abroad but they said that i couldn't do anything because i'm sophomore and i needed more credits, that i better enjoy my time while i'm in NL but i feel it's going to be a year lost, my family say that it doesn't matter that everything is going to be ok, but they don't know it. I'm going to work with a Dr there(i hope!) but college wont be able to acept the work i make there, i feel down cause i'm afraid it's going to be a year lost what can i do to feel better?i don't want to stay because i don't know if i'll be able to travel somewhere in the near or long future. what do you think? thanks
Answer:
What a fantastic opportunity you have to learn about another culture and gain experiences that you can't get in this country. Your years in school can be the most enjoyable of your life. Don't regret that you may miss the next year of college credits, as you will have an opportunity to make that up when you return to this country. Your year abroad will be a year gained, not a year lost. You will return a wiser, more intelligent, and more experienced student. Whatever you do in the Netherlands will be more valuable than a year in college. It will broaden you, give you a chance to understand the world better, learn another language. Be happy that your parents are able to give you this great opportunity.
