I have two scholarships that I am a semifinalist for: and I have to write an essay over them.?

One topic is why should you get the scholarship? I only need a short essay for them. Less than 250 words. If I say that I am a dilligent and hard-working student. (I am in the top ten of my class) My record in high school shows that I do not quit. I have an older brother in college and my parents are supporting him. I have a large family and only my father works. This scholarship would help me achieve my education more easily. Would saying this be enough?
The second one is tell the committee about one thing you have not shared
I was an immigrant who came to American 6 years ago. I could not speak English. Then a few months latter 9/11 happened. I am a Muslim so I had to deal with a lot of problems and I could give examples and how I handeled them. Would that be good enough?

(Go on from there, listing clearly your most significant academic achievements, projects and accomplishments. Include quotations from teachers. Also, include extra-curricular, volunteer, political, religious and employment activities. Good fortune to you.)
