Funds for College for African American Women - Serious answers only!?

Question:
My mother (over 45) is trying to go to college, but does not have the funds to do so. Does anyone know of any scholarships, fellowships, etc. that does not have to be paid back for her to attend?

Answer:
The best place to start with is the FAFSA form because it will tap into need based financial aid from the state and federal governments along with the college itself. Second, some colleges do list private scholarships from companies and outside organizations on its financial aid website. Finally, do a scholarship search on a free membership scholarship search website.

Look at FastWeb.com. It is a scholarship search that will look at all of your qualities and give you a list of awards you can apply to.
There are a number of financial aid reference books available for both women and African-Americans. Check out your local university/college library--they should have copies. If they don't, any good large bookstore should have them. do a search in Amazon's Book section on "scholarships african american" and you'll retrieve some of the titles.
First fill out the FAFSA..not only can she get scholarships for being an African American, but also for being a woman, and for being a non traditional student. If she is a volunteer, she can check that agency. She should contact the Financial Aid Office of the college she is interested in.
I agree with the answerer above. My mother went back at age 35. But it was well worth it. She qualified for several grants because of age, income, family factors. A few words of advice for you...Support! Believe she will need someone to back her up and keep pushing in down times.
...that would depend on the type of education she is looking for...if she is trying to use it to further an existing job or career, sometimes her employer will pay for her continuing education.
She should contact the college and ask the Deen of Admissions about scholarships...then too there are a-lot of Federal programs that will help...grants. (just a quick question back at you... what does "African American" have to do with her education...?)
