Why is it so important to have a college degree to get a decent paying job?
Question:
Answer:
A college degree is today what a high school diploma was in the 40's.
I have a decent paying job, and no degree and no college. After about 10 yrs of work experience, a certification in your specialized field is usually good. The odd thing is, if you speak decently well, and have good writing skills, people will naturally assume you have one. I've had people assume I have a masters, which I find totally hilarious.
And no, it's doesn't make them smarter. But in a few cases, it does make them more arrogant (speaking from personal experience).
Actually it does, but you wouldn't understand.
Yes it does.it's called a college education. It means you took the time, the initiative, and you have the drive to go through more schooling.
People would want someone like that, instead of someone who just coasted through college.
Well, in a way it does (no offense).
Education = knowledge
Knowledge = Power
Why wouldn't you want to be more empowered? Education opens up SO many doors for people. One might be street smart without a college education, but college teaches you so much more about life, I cannot even imagine my life having not been in college.
Do you watch that donald trump show the apprentice? They had the book smarts (College educated) vs. the street smarts (no college) All of the street smarts were very sucessful. They owned their own bussiness or other important jobs. it's just more work to get to the top.
You are correct. I have a college degree but do not regard myself smarter or better than anyone else.
Try getting one with out one. Let us all know how well it works out for you.
read the book "Unemployment for Dummies".
There is so much competition today for good jobs, there has to be something that separates people. It is proven that those with a college degree will earn substantially more over their lifetime than those without. It does not necessarily make a person smarter than one with out a degree, however it shows that they have taken the time and effort to spend four years earning a degree. It shows determination and it is viewed positively by employers. There would be too many applicants otherwise, so credentials are one way to determine who gets the job..
i think college is good if you have a plan for what you want to do and if college will get you to that destination...don't go just to go.it will make you smarter but what you put into it will be what you get out of it.if your future goals don't require college.then maybe taking a class or two on something that will help you will help you prepare. experience can be a rough teacher so you might want all the help you can get to prepare youself.
Some people without a degree would be smarter than those with them. There are thousands of examples of people who have become extremely successful without them. However, I think employers look at it as an indicator of proven intelligence and dedication. The content of what you learn as you get a degree is also important but is just a starting point. You always learn more and usually more quickly on the job.
It is important to have a degree because there is now so much competition in the work force, that employers are going to go for the most educated and experienced people. They rather has some one more educated because the figure they will catch on faster. Also with the rise in technology it is important educate yourself in your field to give you the competitive edge.
You can get a good paying job without a degree. Or put alot of time and loyalty into a company and hopefully get promotions and raises. BUT a degree gives you flexibility to leave that job if they start treating you badly or take advantage of you. It gives you an edge at least on paper if you suddenly need to apply for a new job if the company you have worked your way up in suddenly goes out of business- you never know.
I agree. Why should a doctor have a medical degree? It's not like anatomy or biology is all that important when you're prescribing medication or performing open-heart surgery, after all. It's only as necessary as physics and chemistry are to the nuclear physicists, and literature is to authors, and history is to archaeologists.
*shivers* Actually, I think I would prefer for my doctors to know what they are doing, and for nuclear physicists to know their math, and for authors to write with correct grammar, and for archaeologists to know the historical significance of their findings. It's scary to think of what the world would be like if a college education wasn't required for high-maintanence careers.
INVEST IN YOURSELF.
College has become CRITICAL for today's advanced workplace--mostly because globalization has made the workplace extremely competitive--because almost all major American businesses are now competing worldwide.
They require the best talent
An additional factor is that our PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM IS A COMPLETE DISASTER--it doesn't prepare MOST students for the workplace. Although, I see many peers (college grads) with similar problems. :O)
There are a lot of reasons. But you are right, having a degree doesn't make you "better." Just more competitive in the marketplace. INVEST IN YOURSELF.
Well, it depends on how you look at it. I have hired and fired a lot of people working in the work force. When a company hires for a good position there are usually too many people that apply. I do not have time to read or interveiw them all. So, I throw out the ones with no formal education. WOW 3/4 of them are gone! A much easier decision! And I know that they all have made a committment to their own self and their own education for the period of time that it took to get their degree. They will most likely have that same dedication still in their personality! I want that person on my team! It also shows a standard of education and we might be able to rely on their being able to speak and act correctly on the job. We also give Math tests for employment. Why? Well, that weeds out many more people and leaves me with the people that have critical thinking skills on top of their degree. SO, I am down to only a few job applicants. This is usually a more accurate way to weed out who might be best for a good paying job and who is worth my investment. Yes, high math scorers and college grads can be bad employees, but much less than someone who is uneducated and has no clue about the real world and what is out there. So, I say, study. Get at least an AA/AS and some trade school, or get a BA/BS and do some intern work. You will get a better job, be happier in life and have something accomplished , not to mention be a good example to younger people who are watching you in your family and your circle of friends!
Possessing a college degree suggests an intelligent human being with the capacity to learn or teach. Having a college degree will let you in most professional doors; it purports an individual capable of learning most concepts and ideas and putting them to practical use, as well as expounding on the concepts principles and foundation. A college graduate can learn most concepts and apply them. A college graduate is an entry level to most professions and to higher formal knowledge and training. College graduates have the capacity to manage, organize, and make ordinal decisions in professional organizations.
Honey, college degree is like a ticket to financial freedom, Yes, you can get anykind of job without college degree but those kind of job is not going to bring you to a more better paying salary and most decent job. OK, lets say you are a cartoonist or an artist and got lucky you landed a good paying job, but having a college degree and doing the same in a big company has a more chance of getting paid more than having no college degree. And it will be hard for you getting a job in a big company too because you don't have a degree. There are other things that you will learn in school aside from being good already at the talent you have. You will learn marketing your talent, and other things that involve it. It's hard to explain everything because i don't exactly know what kind of job you are in right now that you don't think college degree is needed and yet you can earn good amount of money that will make you taken cared of until you're old age. But, having a college degree makes a lot of sense and advancement to a person with - than a person without a college degree. It makes them powerful in the society - maybe not that smarter but more employable, more trusthworthy, more of more. and because they have that degree, they are sorrounded with smarter people, and they will learn from them by talking to them, and that's how people with college degree become smarter overtime. They have the chance to be exposed than those who doesn't have the degree.
Smarter in what? College provides a book-smart education, social experience, and provides juicy employment opportunities assuming you networked well. It sort of a self-fulfilling prophecy: The good students, who would succeed without college, tend to go to college to be even more successful.
A book you might like... "The Millionaire Mind". It has quite a few cases of non-collegiate people suceeding just fine in life. Social skills, work ethic, and initiative is all you really need... but the latter two tend to lead to college.
So, try and get an education, but NEVER let not having one stop you. Besides, once you get job experience, college becomes less important.
you are exactly right but the reason u need a college degree is the same reason why u want ur doctor to be educated with a college degree b4 he operates on say u or ur mother wife/husband. but if u just want decent like to make t in the world just get a trade skills and go from there most are a year or less and hands on not just all books books exam exam. nowadays a college degree only means u went to college ohh big deal!! (not!) most ppl dont even use there degrees or work in that fild they studied for but the degree does help when being up for promotion. no matter ur degree u will get first pick in the prom otion then a high school grad only. but watever a degree opens to u, most of the time u can open urself except the docotor lawyers engineer type stuff then college is a big deal. but employers wants experience over book smarts. so with or withoutan degree u still start from the very very bottom unless u are nmber 1 in ur class. lol study hard
I'm not going to repeat all the stuff people have said. But a recent article in the Wall Street Journal talked about some of the false myths about everyone getting a college degree. Truth is, not everyone has the capacity to do the intellectual work in college, although more and more colleges are getting "dumbed down" (which simply means that some employers for some careers find new screening tools). Read http://www.opinionjournal.com/extra/?id=... ... and remember a few things. There are good high-paying jobs in a number of trades that are almost impossible to outsource. If you learn to be a topnotch carpenter, woodworker, electrician, plumber, computer repairperson, general contractor, painter, auto mechanic, etc., you can make a good income (a very good one if you start your own business and are successful) without a degree. Being without a degree doesn't mean being unskilled, and there are plenty of people with degrees from no-name schools that are barely literate, unable to communicate except in text speak (hou r u?), unable to analyze a financial problem, and think that a power point presentation with a bunch of bullet points represents clear thinking. You can educate yourself in many areas (probably not modern medicine, true), and you can continue that education your whole life, particularly with the help of the Internet.
If you have no college degree and no vocational education or trade, then you have a hard slog ahead of you.
This is a really arguable matter. That's why there was the booksmart vs. the streetsmarts in the Apprentice and it was a big hit, because they're all very competitive. People with a college degree does mean that they have more knowledge in a field of study. It doesn't make them smarter in general, but you wouldn't expect someone w/o a college degree to do accounting work or perform surgery on a cancer patient either would you? People like massage therapists or daytraders might not have a proper college education, but you can't doubt that they can perform better than college grads in their field of skills.
Uhh, That's all the employer has to measure intelligence. Another reason is because our society is obsessed with degrees. You're not valued unless you have a degree. You don't have to be educated...you just need to have a degree. It doesn't matter what your degree is in. You can can have a degree in "Wine Tasting." You just need to have one. You don't have to be smart to have a degree...just satisfy the college requirements, and be degreed.
More people can and are getting degrees now so employers are demanding degrees for jobs that don't even require degrees. There's an oversupply of degrees now. There aren't enough high/decent paying jobs for everyone with degrees. Degree holders are going after jobs that non-degree holders are pursuing. People with degrees "tend" to have more options than non-degree holders. The only problem is...the oversupply of degrees lowers salaries and the value of degrees. If you want more options, and want to feed the beast that is the "degree obsession," then you must obtain a degree.
NO. It is not really important if you have enough talent.
For general students it is important ONLY.
The issue of who's smarter is not at issue here. Perhaps you are not aware of the fact that the nation's largest employer, the U.S. government has set certain educational standards for its employees and has even set educational standards for various government contractors, i.e., aerospace companies, law firms, medical facilities, energy providers, etc. And the U.S government mandated educational standards provide the basis why so many city, state and local governments in turn, and contracted businesses, large and small have to conform by only hiring highly educated degreed personnel. Take a look at typical government want ads in your local newspapers and their preference to degreed candidates. You can either choose to ignore the government's intrusion into setting educational standards for most of all employment or you can sit by and choose a more successful alternative to the catch-all phrase "get a job" and embrace the work ethic of starting up your own business which does not rely on a government contract. And those of us who are into our own business, may have found the only approach to success since many of us do not speak English, do not have a college degree; but have a lot of street smarts on how to succeed in business without trying.
Seeking a decent paying job is not the answer. Instead, learn how to start a business, where there are no limits on profitability. It is truly the American dream. Again, there's no boss when you are the boss. By your initial question, anyone can tell that you are an independent and intelligent person, with a bright idea that no college degree will stop you and anyone else in making the most financially in the business world.
Good luck!
It is important because the job market is more competetive these days. If you don't have one, then chances are you will be eliminated. Experience alone won't make it in this job market. Not unless you planned on staying at your current company and hoping for advancement if there is any. If not, then you are stuck in the same situation until retirement. Also, if you are working, it is just a job. A college degree lets you have a career. If you lose your job for some reason, you have to find another. Career lets you remain at that occupation you choose until retirement.
