Do I have to get a meal plan in college?
Question:
Entirely depends on the school. Some require that you pay for the meal plan, others don't even offer one. Some are in large cities with plenty of other choices, some are out in the middle of nowhere without even a Dominos. But if they have local places, they are often pretty cheap so students will consider them instead of the cafeteria.
dont get it! some schools make you but most schools keep it optional. theres always food places on campus you can eat at and pay cash. or off campus and groceries. the meal plans are wayyyy to much money. its not worth it
Many colleges force you to get a meal plan if you are dorming your freshman year. So you don't have much of an option there.
If you're not required to get one, then see if you can talk to people at the school during orientation. They'll be the best people to ask about the food at your specific school.
In most schools you can always add a meal plan anytime during the semester. If you're not dorming, don't worry about it! Food on college campuses tends to be VERY expensive. Sometimes the food is good but sometimes it's horrible! Also, you can pay with cash on campus! I know people who do this. If you don't think you want a meal plan, this may be the way to go.
Finding food off campus depends on your school. If you're out in the boonies, no, you won't find restaurants. If you're in a major city, then of course you can find food!
It really depends on what college you're going to. At my school, freshmen and sophomores are required to get a meal plan, but other schools are going to be different.
It depends on the school you are going to. Some schools require freshmen and other students to get meal plans while others make it optional. At my school, a meal plan was optional but at my best friend's school, she was required to choose from two meal plans. There are definitely alternate sources, and most food places tend to be cheaper in college towns. Depending on your eating habits also, it may be cheaper to get a meal plan because you won't ever find yourself searching for $5 to eat dinner. You have a set amount of meals (most plans come with more allowed meals than you care to eat) and you can always go eat. Hope this helps!
It is optional at universities which offer dormitory housing, but highly recommended. You will save time and effort, freeing you to have more time for your studies, and not having to budget for food (outside the cafeteria, the food is more expensive- in my experience).
There are several options to choose from. I recommend you check out this option before making a decision.
Best wishes.
This all depends on where you go to school. Some places make you live on campus for a year or two and therefore make you get a meal plan as well. If this isn't the case for you and you plan on living on campus, I would at least do a one meal a day plan (so something like 30 meals/month). Most larger schools have alternatives like a Subway or McD's or whatever that you can go to, but that's just as expensive, if not more, than a meal plan.
If you don't eat at school, the best way to do it is to buy a mini fridge and go grocery shopping. Don't go out or order delivery all the time, you'll go broke or starve. Seriously consider eating at least one meal a day at school, it's a good time to make friends and get to know other people and the school. You can take out loans--almost everyone does nowadays and you being well fueled and satisfied so you can do well in class is worth the extra costs. Good luck.
Not all schools require it, but it certainly is a lot more convenient, and can be cheaper, depending on if you can cook or not. I've seen students not have a meal plan in favor of ordering take out and such and they spend well more than if they had a meal plan. I work at a university in the residence halls and I generally suggest people to get one of the smaller meal plans if you're going to get one. You can always add to it or get a larger meal plan, but sometimes you have to wait until the end of hte semester to change to a smaller one.
