Are college professors paid according to their field?

Question:
Different careers pay different. Since a professor with a PhD in Economics or Computer Science could make much more than a professor with a degree in History in the "working world," would they be paid more at a university?

Answer:
Yes. Professors in schools of Business are usually the highest paid. Engineering is usually next. Professors in the sciences generally make more than professors in the humanities.

In addition, salaries vary from institution to institution, and from geographical area to geographical area. Oh, and coaches at sports-oriented universitiese are generally paid more than professors are.

Consult the Chronicle of Higher Education's annual report on average salaries for professors in all fields, nationwide, for a great breakdown of this data.
I'd agree with the previous answer and add that law school faculty do pretty well too.
