Do you know, what is a fair rate of pay for a college grad from environmental engeneer, some experience?
Question:
grad of UCF, hard worker, top grades
really helps to get info from others who have gotten jobs in the environemental engineer area, specialize in soil. thanks
try career builder or salary.com
you can get some useful information from there.
Hey Big Red---you can't be a graduate of that type of degree---Should learn how to spell Engineer to get that hot position. For someone that has no idea how much he should be paid ---I would start and the government minimum of $5.15 an hour. That sounds fair to me.
Red go join the military and get some experience and check the pay.
I'd check with the Trade Periodicals. Every discipline has at least one magazine, usually a monthly, which contains articles about the business (advances in procedure, new uses, etc.) You will need to read the one(s) in environmental engineering after you get a job, so why not start reading in that area now? If you don't already know of any, ask your professors.
The library should have those periodicals. See which companies advertise in them for products or services used in the industry. If anyone is advertising for help, the salary is often stated. That should give you a working estimate of what a reasonable salary is for your services. Also, call the editor and ask! They often can tell you immediately.
Send every company in the magazine a one-page (only) resume, being sure to tell them what you intend to do for THEM. You may get your resume into their hands before they place any help wanted ads.
If you are asked what salary you want, never answer.
Instead put down something like, "Whatever you think the job is worth. I'm not greedy and I believe you will treat me fairly."
Some crafty people might insist on you naming a salary. You should tell them you don't have enough data to make that evaluation. Tell them you know they want to hire competent people, so you need a year or so working for the company before you can tell them what the job is worth.
Turn the conversation back to what you can do for them and say you expect to be as competent as you can be in working for them, but they should expect you to be able to take care of yourself because they don't want to hire someone to work for them who can't take care of themselves.
Then ask them to name what they think a fair salary would be. If they screw you, you'll find out soon enough and can quit.
One last piece of advice. Don't expect to stay on this job forever. Plan on job changes.
