Question:
I am a black female, and i am told that there are plenty of grants/scholarships just for me but i seriously cant find any. I know about the Pell grant but my parents make more then 50,000 soo i cant apply for that. I want to do this on my own and not make my parents pay a cent for college..please help me! Oh and i a senior i will be graduating in june 2008 if that helps

Answer:
Honey, the best thing that you can do is go see the financial aid officer on your college campus. That person can advise you about every type of grant and/or loan.
Personally, I had the same issue as you do---my father made too much money---so I attended a community college because frankly, it was cheaper. However, it really helped me in the long run b/c the classrooms were smaller and it seemed that the teachers would work with you more. Once I received my Associates, I moved on to a 4 yr school.

Like you, I wanted to establish independence from my parents so that I would NOT burden them with my financial/tuition issues so I joined the U.S. Navy. I would NOT advise you to do this. Ha.Ha.But it was VERY good for me. That allowed me to experience the REAL life and still be protected with my new family. Once I finished my hitch, I returned to college. At that point I could claim independence and receive various grants/loans along with my GI bill so it was not all bad!!
Anyway just go to the counselors office, be courteous and ask questions. Also there is a book at Barnes & Noble about these grants that you may qualify.
Good Luck!!
