College Scolarships?
Question:
I have taken Geometry, Algebra 1, integrated math 1, and I am going to take a college course in the spring of next year.
My dad makes quite a lot of money, but is not going to pay for any of my college (so I'm pretty screwed for financial aid)
I am going to graduate with a record number of math credits from my school.
I am in my school's gifted and talented program.
I live in Maine.
Answer:
my friend was under the same situation.
this might be way off on a tengent, but wy dont you try to be declared an independant? since your parents wont pay for college...
but back to options that arent way out there. wwww.fastweb.com - go there, sign up and it will become your best friend if you're lookign for scholarships. also www.scholarshipexperts.com
fafsa tries to estimate how much government aid you're eligible for...
and dont forget, whatever college you decide, they will have their own financial aid office so... there will always be SOMEONE around to hand you a couple dollars here in there.
in the mean time... get a job just to be safe. =)
I don't have a whole lot of answers for your scholarship question other than checking out Fastweb.com, but as for the financial aid situation, claim yourself for taxes and on your next FAFSA. This way the government won't take into account your dad's salary, only yours.
Please note that it is spelled "scholarships" - they will be easier to find if you can spell them correctly! ;)
Scholarships are generally applied for and given in a student's senior year, once their performance is already demonstrated and in preparation for their immediate enrollment in college. So you probably get apply for or receive any college scholarships yet.
However, it's never to early to start looking ahead and preparing. This is a great time to start researching and seeing what sort of scholarships are out there, how much money you can get from them, and what you have to do to qualify or win.
Talk to your school's college counselor, and go search online. Check with the financial aid office of the college(s) of your choice, and also check to see if their alumni association offers any scholarships. Skim through all the scholarships and see what sort of things they look for - not just GPAs, but extracurricular activities and leadership roles. Then start developing those qualities in yourself so you'll be ready when you do apply.
