Can a High School golfer play in local scrambles and tourns. without jeaopardizing his future college career?

Question:
Got into an arguement with a friend who was saying that a High Schooler could not play in club Tournaments or scrambles for money while still in high school because this would be a violation of some sorts if this person ever went to college on a golf scholarship and the NCAA found out.

Answer:
Your high school coach can tell you best, but when I played, I entered a number of local tournaments (club championship, etc.), and one of the college coaches recruiting me said it was a problem.
yes
Check with the PGA to see exactly what the cash limits are for winnings to remain an amateur. Also you WILL want to check with the NCAA for the exact limitation on high school level winnings and awards. Sometimes winning script instead of cash (merchandise or gift certificates) is OK. The info will be on the NCAA website.
I would talk to youre coach. I bet he or she would say yes. It could if you suck. But if you are good it can help you.
As the other answers have alluded to, it is not the actual PLAYING in the tournaments that is at issue. What is at issue is whether or not you are deemed to have lost your amateur status. According to the R&A website, a $500 prize or higher will cause you to lose this status. To play it safe, you might want to refuse any winnings.
Don't take the money!!!
