College project?

Question:
We are doing a report on a college campus daycare and how to start one. What expenses we would have and how it would be paid for. Or how college students would pay for the daycare to be able to attend college. Any advise would be great. Thanks

Answer:
Expenses you would have….

I am assuming that the daycare would be something set up by the school, not a private company coming in and running a daycare for the school.

Insurance
Labor
Real Estate (you would probably need to lease an area from the college)
Utilities (garbage, water, electric…you will probably need to pay a share of that)
Licensing

Kid Supplies, such as (but not limited to):
Food
Snacks
Drinks
Diapers
Games
Puzzles
Books
Mats to sleep on
Cleaning supplies
Tables/Chairs
Field trips
Transportation (you may need a designated vehicle to be insured to transport kids for field trips, emergencies, etc..)
Playground equipment
Toys

Business Supplies, such as:
Paper
Copy machine
Computers
Printers
Room Decor (paint, carpeting, artists to paint murals, etc..)
Desks

Some of the things may be provided by the University. Some things you could do without. Some things you could get for free or cheap (such as an artist to paint the walls…if the school has an art program, work it out with an art teacher to count this as a project for a student). Some things you might not need at all (do you need field trips? A copy machine? Big people desks?).

How could these things be paid for? That is a good question. Solicit the area businesses for money and materials. Is there a local trade school nearby? Solicit the trade school for assistance (does the school have a home repair course? They could use the room to teach drywall, framing techniques, painting, carpet laying, etc…). Would the local unions kick in some labor in exchange for something you have (reserve a few slots for union children at a discount, perhaps this would be a stepping stone for the union to get more work at the University). Could the daycare offer advertising space on the back of all handouts home for businesses that donate or help build the daycare (similar to the back of many church bulletins).

Finally, how would college students pay for daycare? Perhaps the daycare could be part of a work study program so it would be federally subsidized, thus cheaper for the students who use it. Would the college be willing to add daycare costs to the tuition of the people who use it? Then costs could be paid via loans and scholarship income. How about credit for parents who use the daycare and also work there during their free time?

That is the best I can come up with. Hope this helps.
Insurance and training / licencing are two big outgoings. Get the college or local authority to contribute as it enables wider participation (more, diferent, people to access education). Charge a premium for early / late hours when your customers could be working
