I want to know what kind of college I am eligible for?

Question:
I'm starting sophomore year soon, and I need to know whether I should stay where I'm at grade and activity-wise, or if I should push harder. I'm taking two honors courses, and have all As, with maybe one or two B's. I'm in Girl Scouts (11 yrs), I am in three volunteer type clubs at school. I don't play any sports. I have around a 3.8 GPA. Haven't taken SATs yet. I am in a very high end school system with a high college acceptance rate- wealthy, lots of available resources, so I can make changes based on your answers. I would really hate to go to community college, so I need to know what kinds of activities get the most scholarship $ from higher-up colleges. What kind of a college can I get into? Should I be working harder? What advice do you have? Please help.. my parents aren't exactly the most supportive out there.

Answer:
First of all, you're taking a great step in making inquiries at this stage in the game. The college search is a long process and the earlier you start planning for it the better you'll be in the future.

You need not take on any more extracurricular activities- your involvement in three service organizations speaks very highly of you. If you haven't already, consider taking a leadership position in some of the activities you're involved in--this will boost your resume even more.

Consider taking Advanced Placement courses by your junior year if your school offers them. I also suggest that you take the SAT as soon as possible. The earlier you take it the better. Moreover, if you aren't satisfied with your score, take it again until you are! In most cases, the more you take the SAT (or ACT), the better your score will be.

Now, as for financing higher education...this is bad news. College is simply becoming unaffordable even for middle class Americans. My institution increased its tuition by 5% this past year and while this may seem like very little, it will definitely have an impact on my parents' wallet. If you demonstrate financial needs you will get federal assistance--but probably not that much. However, there are thousands of scholarships that are offered to high-achieving students like you (check out fastweb.com if you haven't.) Lots of students don't take advantage of these scholarships which gives you better odds of winning. Applying for scholarships in itself is an arduous process so again, be thinking about it early.

Before I let you go, I feel compelled to respond to an earlier poster. The bit about "unless you're a minority you can forget it"...I beg to differ. I am a minority and I got merely pennies from my university despite my academic record--schools simply don't want to give out much money, minority or not.
Take the SATs and then ask again.
You'll probably get into most of the mid to upper schools you apply to outside of the Ivy's, CalTech, Stanford, etc which can never be guaranteed. You should be applying to schools like Penn State, Purdue, Rutgers, Virginia, etc. As far as scholarship $, you can pretty much forget about that unless you're a minority.
well, with grades like that you can apply to any 4 year school you want.

Also if you're not busy after school play a sport!

you'll enjoy high school a lot more (thats what i think anyways ahaha). but it's just a suggestion... :)
Nobody really needs college to tell you the truth. I have been working at Burger King for the past 10 years and I now make $12.50 an hour. I drive around a Porsche Escort.
