How can I prove my Native American heritage?

Question:
I am applying to colleges and I am min search of ways to prove that I am 1/16th Cherokee because there are scholarships available. I have only ever been told that I am by my family. I have no idea where to start or how to search. Please help!

Answer:
Talentless1 had the best answer. Basically you need to trace back to your 2nd great grandparents and prove one was a Cherokee. The ones from Oklahoma are the most likely.

If all four of your grandparents are alive, ask each one who their grandparents were. One of them (grandparents grandparent) has to be the Cherokee, if you are 1/16th. (or two of them were half each, or four of them were one-quarter, etc.)

I've been pasting a 1100-word essay into some of these questions. You might look at one and follow the steps. My answers stick out because it is long and there are 11 links.

The one below is specific to American Indians. Read a dozen posts and you'll get an idea. Search the forum for "Cherokee".

If they say "Cherokee", fine. If they say "Cherokee Princess", there is a 30% chance it is a legend, nothing more.

Open a casino.

There are hundreds of "native American tribes" popping up all over the country that no one has ever heard of before they decided to get into the gambling industry.

I would suspect that many of them have less than 1/16 "native American" heritage.
The 1st answer is the best resource for you most likely, however it seems unfair, you being so removed from you heritage, that you would try to get over in this way.

LALALA - I know many people get over like this, but do you think it is ethically right for you to do that? You don't even know any of your family who lived in reservation or stayed connected with your tribe, yet you want to get off financially for being 1/16 Native American?

If you get it like that, I truly hope you will use your education to do good things for the Native American people.
I'm allegedly 1/16 myself but I was never told about it until I was in my forties! Can't prove it, however, but good luck to you.
Well I really hope you can't prove it if money is the only reason you want to know. I have cherokee in me as well. However never have I even dreamed of using it to get money. I have searched and searched for my family and haven't found but one person but i can promise you it was not to get rich or help in school. Maybe you should also check to see if you have African American in you too they get alot of scholarships.
