College Question?

Question:
Do you think it's better to go to college knowing someone or to go all by yourself?

I really want to go to University of Maryland (which is 3000 miles away) because it's everything I want. But if I did go, I would be all by myself. I would leave my four best friends and I'm afraid I would lose them for good. Part of me is saying I should go for it because I may not get another opportunity, but part of me also can't leave them.

Things are also complicated by the fact that an ROTC scholarship makes you pick your top three schools way far in advance. So even if I wanted to I couldn't wait until we were all accepted into our universities to see where I wanted to go.

I have to decide soon.

Answer:
I've done both, and for me it was easier to go without knowing anyone than it was to go in knowing a few people.

When you go to school with people you know, you tend to just stick with them. It's hard to WANT to make new friends when your old friends are there too.

When I went to school knowing no one, I depended on myself to make friends. I met some great people, and I really came to trust myself. It really helped me come out of the shell.

I think the reality is that whatever friends you make in college, you WILL keep for the rest of your life. They won't trump your high school friends, but college friends are a special breed. My husband's friend from college just died at the age of 31, and it has brought so many of his college buddies together.
i went all alone to Texas A&M and im from Michigan, and i'll tell you what, it was the best time of my life hands down, you'll live in a dorm and make tons of friends and have a great time, i highly suggest going!!!!! and ok lets say you dont like it after one semester jsut go back home, its win win
Do what you have to. Pick what is best for you. As for your friends, they'll be there. With all the communication that is available today you don't have to be apart even though you are 3000 miles away. Get a web cam and you already have the computer. good luck. Do what is right for you. It is your life, and if this is what you want. Go for it.
I'm from CA, and I'm going all the way to the East Coast. Initially, I didn't know anyone going to my school, but you get to meet others going there at receptions, as well as "friends of friends." college is a chance to make new friends, and how do you know all four of your best friends are going to the same college?
