I can't afford to get a loan for son's college after receiving award letter, where can I find more funds?
Question:
Answer:
Well, how about him going to a less expensive school? Learn the difference between what is wanted, and what is needed. He can also get a job and help out. I know to some people that sounds really cruel, but millions of people have worked their way through school, and are alive and well today to talk about it.
You could try asking the prince's trust.

work over time
Try checking with the school itself he is going to be going to for any type of scholarships.
Have you filled out the FAFSA?
Have you gotten everything you can find at the college? It's an expensive one so I'm sure they have some financial aid available.
Does he have to go to that college? I mean that is really expensive.but I can understand if his heart is set on it.
Good luck.
pell grants and scholarships
Make sure that you get the FAFSA in as early as possible to be eligible for grants like the Pell Grant. Call the specific school's financial aid department and ask about scholarships that your son may be eligible for. He'll probably have to write an essay or something, so again, do this ASAP. This also applies to local organizations, ask at the high school to see if they have a list of local people/organizations that offer scholarships. You might want to go to the library and see if they have one of those books on scholarships, or search online.
$80,000 in student loans is nothing. If he wants to get an advanced degree, he'll owe 6 figures. The alternatives are to go to a cheaper school or wait until he can afford to pay out of his own pocket. He may be able to get some of it forgiven if he does work for the poor or disabled, something that was not available to me when I graduated (a long time ago) with a large debt.
If he is talented, and if the US is still a commercially viable country when he graduates, he'll do fine. Just hope he remebers who sacrificed to put him through college.
Check with the financial aid dept. at the school. If he has a part time job and pays you rent (any amount) then he is considered self sufficent and often will get higher $amount for aid.
I certainly understand; I'm going through the same dilemma myself. It's terrible that colleges charge so much...
If your son absolutely has his heart set on this college, you should check out www.fastweb.com. It's an excellent scholarship search engine that is absolutely free (paid for by advertising). You enter some information about yourself (don't worry; it's stuff like hobbies, grades, and ethnicity, not social security numbers or anything) and it filters out scholarships you aren't eligible for and gives you a list of the ones that you are. It saved me a LOT of time, and it was a big help.
Good luck to you and your son as you make tough decisions and search for financial aid!
