Piano and vocal at community college?
Question:
I'm not sure if I want to take vocal at the college, because I'd rather pay more then damage my vocals. But how about piano? Would it be safe to take piano?
I'm actually thinking about taking private vocal lessons.
Answer:
While I was going to a performing arts high school, I went to a community college, in order to get rid of some college general ed. requirements before I went on to college. I was really impressed with the music program at my community college and, in addition to the general ed courses, I took voice, piano, and theory. From there I went on to The Juilliard School in NY to major in voice. I was expecting to get a great musical education at Juilliard, but was really disappointed. After a few years at Juilliard I went back to my community college and next year I will be transferring to a state school where my now new voice teacher teaches.
Just because a voice teacher is at a community college does not mean they are at a lower level. Actually, I found the voice teachers at my particular community college to be amazingly better than the teachers I studied with at Juilliard (I'm not exaggerating). It all depends! Go take lessons from a lot of teachers and see which person you connect with. You will know if your voice teacher is not teaching you correctly because your range will diminish and your voice may become raspy. All of this is reversible, so then quit from that teacher and go take from somebody else until you find somebody that works.
Hope this helps, and good luck with your training!
