Problem with College & Scholarships...?

Question:
I was accepted into my first choice college, but was not offered any scholarships or financial aid. No other school can offer me the same opportunities as this college, but I plan on becoming a journalist and will not have much money to pay off college loans. My dad (who is extremely conservative and feels it is his "duty" to pay for his children) said he will cover the cost of my education, but will be simultaneously paying my $40,000 tuition, my brother's $35,000 tuition, and my other brother's $30,000 tuition. I know he does not have the money for this, but have not found a single scholarship I am even elligble for! I have tried to convince him to let me take out the loans for my education, but he won't let me. I'm considering chagning schools simply because of the cost, but as I said I can't get the same opportunities anywhere else.

Any suggestions? And please, do not recommend Fastweb or any related sites, they have proved useless so far.

Answer:
i dont know if these will help or not, so i will just post all that i have on all i have found.

there are government loans & grants and then there are private loans & scholarships.

pass on the info to others who may be able to use it for their schooling as well.

try to aim for grants/scholarships more... they are not to be paid back. its confusing sometimes, but just keep applying. Scholarships usually have a 1 or 2 page application, and require an essay. Take your time with the essay, so yours stands out.

every big (and small) company you see (manufacturer, orgs, corps and groups also) all have grants and scholarships they hand out like candy. Walmart, Kmart, Target, Coke, computer companies etc etc etc

heres a link with a HUGE amount of some available. some you will need to copy and paste into a new window. also, fastweb (take the time to fill it in) will search databases and get back to you with a list of scholarships you qualify for.

Also contact all mens, womens associations in your state, they almost always have grants & scholarships. What ever field you are going into, contact the orgs, associations etc for them; Also check with professional organizations related to your career interests, such as the American Bar Association or the American Medical Association. they also always have scholarships. Research and dig, call then write. Its all worth it.

OVER apply; it doesnt hurt to have too many, and the extra funds can help with housing.

I'm surprised that FastWeb hasn't help so far. Anyway, my high school offers multiple scholarships from the community that are applicable to different areas of interest. Also, I have used scholarships.com. I know you haven't been successful with these sites, but I have put Journalism down for one of my interests as well as a couple of other interests areas and I've found multiple scholarships that are able to tie in your different interests. For example, if your interested in Journalism, then I would suggest looking for scholarships in a particular area of interest you hope to write in. Also, I would suggest looking for internships because many of the ones I have seen will pay for some of your college expenses. Good luck and don't give up your dream of going to your first choice. If you applied to other schools and they offered you a better deal, bargain with your 1st choice college to see if they will offer you scholarships/aid!

****Also, I do know that the FAFSA form has to be updated yearly. I'm not sure if that would help. Have you considered getting a job? I've applied for many scholarships and have not received money, but keep trying. You never know where you might find some more money.****
You weren't offered ANY financial aid? None? No student loans? Yes, m'dear, student loans are financial aid and they are generally offered to students whose families demonstrate that they have more resources to pay for college than students who do not. Unless you didn't apply through the FAFSA I cannot imagine that you were offered nothing, especially if you have two siblings in college at the same time. I strongly suspect that you were offered federal student loans and a work study job rather than grants and are not satisfied that you didn't get *free* money.

Of course, you could consider attending college part time and getting a job to help to pay for this, that is a time-honored way to go to college when you get *no* financial aid. Another route is to go to your local community college and start out intending to transfer (check your school of choice for a transfer compact or articulation agreement with a nearby community college) and take your general education classes in general studies or liberal arts track. This way you kill a number of birds with a single stone--you get about half of your college career done with only your journalism courses to do at your college of choice; the cost of the two year degree is probably less than the cost of a single year at your college of choice; and you get to live at home and save dorm fees. This option would also save your dad some money in the long run and have more money to help you out in your last two years.
