I started college in Kansas at age 30 and I received an in-state tuition grant. You had to live in the state, apply early, and your tuition was paid. Now, I WAS poor at the time, but I don't recall need being a criteria. Maybe it had something to do with attending a community college but I don't know that either -- my advisor just told me to apply, so I did.
If need IS a factor, there are Pell grants that you don't have to pay back. They don't pay much though.
(From my humble beginnings at community college, I now have my MS and am a college professor and can attest that education is worth the sacrifice)
Good luck to you -- you can do it!
You could surf the net for scholarships. I think that if you plan to go into certain fields of study, there are scholarships for all kinds of things.I don't think age matters if its not about high school grades.
I would also contact a college and ask if they have someone you could talk to.They know about types of financing we probably haven't heard of.
I was in the exact same situation 2 years ago. Scholarships sounds like the best option for you. There are alot of scholarship available for adult students. My school offers a great payment plan, they take your tuition cost and spread it out over the semester.
try going to www.scholarships.com. i hope that may help
Tried scholarships, grants and so forth, no good. Work study doesn't pay all the bills. One option is the National Guard. Not all guardsman deploy overseas-a good number remain here in the US. Get an MOS that would compliment your education goals and combine the 2. You would get college credits for basic training and advanced individual training. Also you gain access to CLEP and Dantes testing (you are able to challenge college courses for full credit by taking standardized tests). I was able to test out an Associate of Arts Degree in Humanities this way. This paved the way for me to go straight to gaining a BA degree without having to take a bunch of courses that coved the same material that I had in High School. I did this at age 24. With the National Guard, you gain access to the New GI Bill and also to education assistance program benefits. This also includes federal workstudy programs. The other part is that this is a sure way of financing an education and it does work.
