College essay.?
Question:
Answer:
I did a similar essay two years ago for a sociology class.
Things to think about:
Does hip hop define a particular culture? Does the lifestyle portrayed in hip hop lyrics and videos have a positive influence on its listeners? Are the goals set out by hip hop artists achievable for their listeners? Is hip hop today different from the original hip hop? Was hip hop meant to help "Urban" people?
Suppose you are an impressionable young urban kid, and you are bombarded with the lyrics from hip hop songs. What cultural attitudes would you glean from these lyrics are acceptable to society?
Yes, I think it is harmful.
I think it may have hurt urban students due to the 'gangsta' image so many hip hop stars like to project. The hip-hop stars talk about street cred, shootings, etc. Young urban youth that idolize the hip-hop stars often times end up trying to emulate them, with disasterous results.
