Answer:
I am going to assume you are a high school student. It's good to think ahead, but you want to stay focused on the immediate future. Go to college and get a bachelor's degree. Medical school doesn't require a specific major, but you must take certain classes before you apply. Your best bet would be either biology or chemistry. Any major that will give you a healthy dose of bio and chem is a good choice for pre-med students. In your junior or senior year of college, you should take the MCAT (Medical College Admissions Test). It will likely be required for any med school you apply to. The higher you score on that test, the better your chances are of getting in. When you get your BA or BS (likely a BS) and have a passing score on the MCAT, you are ready to apply to med school. If you're looking at Hopkins or any other prestigious school like that, I will assume you are an outstanding student (straight A's through high school and college). If time is an issue, you're looking at four years for the BS (if you go full time) and another four to six for med school. When that is done, you need another two to three years to specialize in one area of medicine, unless you plan to go into family practice. It's a major commitment and it can seem daunting to any student, but if you think you are ready you should go for it. The rewards will far outweigh the sacrifices.
Chemical Engineering is also a great option if you're pre med. Pre med requirements include organic chemistry with lab, biology etc. You would usually spend 4 years as an undergrad and then apply to medical school. University of Pennsylvania also has a great medical school and it is a mere hour's train ride to nyc. :) It also has a great undergrad school.
