Guarantee my son goes to college...?

Question:
I have one son after 14 years of marriage and he will be our one and only. My wife and I want to ensure he will be able to go to college and not have to start life with loans and bills. We have put away 50 dollars every pay check for him since the week he was born, but I just cannot see us making the money we will need for him in todays world. Do you think it would be inappropriate or in bad taste to ask the internet community to send just $1 dollar to him to ensure he has the money needed to go to school? If for some reason, he cannot attend college, then the money would be donated to a local scholarship program so some other lucky child can get a jump on life...

Answer:
It sounds like you have a great start, you shouldn't worry. unles he is going to an expensive school. Just get good grades, do a few after school activities and you will probably get some scholarships or grants. I am not a great student and not completely poor but I still got a lot of grants. Also, see if his school will let him take some baasic college courses early. In my state, you tuition is covered if you take classes your junior or senior year. I will already have 14 free college credits by the time I go to my college, and I made sure they covered some graduation requirements for college. AP courses are also good, if you get a 3 or above on the $85 exam you may be able to get requirements covered without taking the course in college. At the college I am going to, if I get at least a three on my AP us history exam I will get two us history classes out of the way and get credit for them! Just try to do a little bit of what I said and it should help your son start college with less classes to take and less debt. Going to a community college after could help too, you might be able to get 2 years of classes for only 5-6,000 dollars, depending on the school. A state university is better than going to a private school if you don't want to rack up debt, and the education is just as good.
It would be great if people would donate, but you have to think that noone is going to because that would be singling your child out from many that their parents don't even have $50 a month to put back.

Make sure he gets good grades and he could look a scholorships. Also through sports.

Ontop of that their are Pell Grants that do not have to be paid back. Actually, there is a lot out there to help with college that isn't a loan. One other thing that you may want to check on is scholorships available through your work.

The cheapest way to get through college I think is using a community college. You get the same classes, but just an associates degree instead of a bachelors. You can always transfer to a bigger college later. Just try searching college scholorships online and it will give you endless options.
I don't think you are going to get very many people to send you a $1.00. I would not do it. If you put the $50 away 26 times a year for 14 years you should have $18,200 by now. If you continue this till he is 18, you will have put $23,400. If you have invested this money wisely, you should have around $30,000 when he gets ready for college. You need to pick a local college where he can live at home, then he will have enough money for the college.
If you put $50.00 a paycheck into a savings account for 18 years, that would be roughly $30,000. Also, when he fills out his FAFSA he will be eligible for a Pell Grant which doesn't have to be paid back. There are also hundreds of scholarships that go unused every year because no-one applies for them.

$30,000 would easily pay for a 2 year degree at a community college. It also might pay a full 4 year tuition at a State School.

There is no need to ask for handouts when there is plenty of free funding available already.
im sorry but y our son shoudl be greatful for whsat you have already done for him. if he cant afford a good school (which most people) cant then tell him theres no shame in attending a state university. At 50 bucks a month 1 year equals 600 bucks. 600 times 18 years equals 10,800. He could def afford to go to community/state college, tell him to study and get scholarships to fufill the rest and he will get state funding (pell grant which is usually 5,000 a year) as well. he should be able to afford school. my parents didn t do any of that for and im still paying off loans. dont be a begger, u son needs to be able to stand on his own two feet and pay expenses for his education. if u do everythign for him his whoel life he will become spoiled.
Look into a 529 savings plan for your son now. It has tax benefits you may not realize and will allow you to save for him. When the time comes he can apply for aid as well.

I suspect the internet community will look on your request as a scam to get money in your pocket rather than his education fund.
