Internships...is going through college placement the only way?
Question:
So I'm hoping that there are internships I could get on my own and not have to pay for them as I would a college course. Plus the internships would hopefully be paying ones as well.
I'm up for a paid internship through my college, and even got an offer. But will not be able to cover the $600. So I'm looking into other options just in case.
Answer:
You absolutely do not have to go through your school (unless you need college credit for the internship). You can go through your college career center (who should have pages of listings) or through a website like Monster or CareerBuilder.
Also, the best way is often to get one through a friend or family member. People who want summer interns often ask peers and co-workers if they have any kids/friends looking for internships. I got 3 friends paid internships at Smith Barney when I worked there one year--people were always asking me when they wanted interns.
Otherwise you can just pick a company you want to work at and drop by with a resume. Often the receptionist will know who might need/want an intern, even if that person isn't actively recruiting.
Check the company's website, most of them allow for you to apply for an internship just as if you were a full-time perm. job.
I am not sure as to how much luck you will have finding a paid internship, guess it depends on what field it is in.
Best Wishes!
