Is it reasonable to expect parents to pay 100% of college expense?

Question:
when the cost is 48.5K/year and EFC calculated by college is 41.9K.

Answer:
NO!! My parents only pay for up to 2000 a year for mine (out of 10000).. I think it is wrong to expect them to pay it all because college is supposed to signify growing up, not living off your parents money for even longer.

I understand it's school but still you should be paying some of it.. There are grants and loans and stuff you can get if you don't have the money right up front.

But definately don't expect your parents to pay for all of it.. Because with books and everything else, you could probably break them... bad...
unless they're filthy rich, not really
ummm. no. personally i have to get scholarships n whatever they dont pay, i have to take out a loan & pay for it myself. so there. dont complain.
no, it is not reasonable. it is reasonable to expect the student and parents to work together to find a financial solution - loans, grants, scholarships etc...

and no, the government shouldn't pay for everyone to go either. if your family doesn't have a ton of money, then you need to get great grades and apply for scholarships to supplement loans.
No! That's almost 1/5 of a million dollars (that is a LOT of money - almost enough to buy a whole house). You will have to go scholarship hunting or pay off the rest of it later in loans.
I don't think it's reasonable at all... even if they have money. There comes a time when the child, who has become an adult, takes at least some responsibility.
Nope. Whose education is it? I have a daughter who is attending school who has school loans. My husband and I went to school and have paid off our school loans. We are helping, but we will not pay all the loans off. How else will our daughter learn to deal with money for herself?
Unfortunately the federal aid people do not take into account a lot of things, such as other children in the house that tuition may be paid, eating, mortgage, car notes, medical expenses, etc. They only see income, and the number of people in college. I think the college may have made a mistake in their caculations. I make around that much, but my EFC for me and my daughter was not that high. I mean they expected me to pay for my tuition, my school is way cheaper and that must be an expensive school you referenced. I have to get student loans for myself but my daughter gets Pell and TAG( a state grant). Have the school double check their caculations, in the meanwhile, double check your FASFA to be sure you did not enter incorrect numbers.
Many people see saving for your children's school is more important then saving for yourself. It is more important for parents to save for retirement for the following reasons:
-You can't get a scholorship for retirement
-The student will have many years to pay off loan debt
-Soon enough SS with be exhausted

Coming from someone who had around 60K in student loans, I really could not and would not ask my parents to pay for my school. I think it really has made me appreciate the value of money. Graduating a year ago I had to set up a budget and plan to pay my education off. I feel many people who don't have student loan debt, end up blowing a lot of their money when they are young... and that is a habit that is tough to get out of.
No. I think you should do whatever you can to do your part, even if it is just working part time to to help pay for books and your spending money, etc. For many parents, expecting them to foot the entire bill is simply unrealistic these days, regardless of the EFC. An EFC is hardly an accurate view of what a family can really afford to pay. You should be applying for any scholarship you can get your hands on. This is your college, your future, you are now an adult. Start by being responsible now.
My parents and I had an awesome arrangement. We "split" college. We looked at what college cost per year(including dorm fees) and divided the number in two. Any scholarships that I had personally applied for or earned due to academics came out of my half. I also paid for my books on top of my half. I am still paying off student loans but I am glad to know that I helped my family and didn't burden them with the whole thing. And they were glad to help with a reasonable sum.
