Should we have given the CEOs grand daughter the $$??

Question:
Our company has a college scholarship fund. The CEOs grand daughter applied, but didnt make it into the top 8 (a point system was used) so she didn't get awarded. Now we (committee) are all in the dog house. Should we have just GIVEN it to her even though her application wasnt one of the best?

Answer:
NO WAY! And GOOD for you- stick to your guns and the HELL with the CEO. So many of them are a bunch of power hungry, greedy , ego maniacal grrrrrrrrrrrrrr I donno whats - this is a good example of what I mean, isn't it?
College scholarship funds are to be awarded on MERIT not via family association.
There should be a clause that says that family members and employees are exempt from applying.
No way! She already has a leg up having her gradfather as a CEO. We all have to makes our own way in the world and although it does happen, ethically and morally it shouldnt. Who cares who she is!
Hell NO! Seems to me like it's only fair to disqualify a family member. That's why relatives are never eligible for contests and stuff...so there's no chance for or allegation of impropriety.
Nope. By doing what you all felt best, you have all kept the integrity of the fund and of yourselves. Don't feel too guilty, if it's the CEO's granddaughter, she'll probably get some financial aid from her grandfather regardless.
No stick to your guns don't let the CEO get all butt hurt because others are better than his grandaughter.
Nope you're not wrong, she shouldn't have been in the contest in the first place. The CEO probably expected his granddaughter to win, too bad so sad. We all have to work hard in this world, his granddaughter should be no exception. The scholarship was awarded to the person who deserved it the most. She already has a leg up by having the CEO as a grandparent..too bad... she needs to work hard like everyone else..
you did the right thing of not giving it to her. there are certainly a lot of applicants more qualified than she was, and they needed the help more than she did. It's sickening to see that rich bratty children always get away with what they want while those who work their a** don't get rewarded.
Absolutely NOT! If she didn't have the application to get it why should she have it. It is not like the CEO can't afford to help her out more than likely. This is why so many that can't afford to go to college don't go because those that can afford to are awarded scholarships because of who they are or who they know. They should be based on need not social settings.
Good for you for not giving it to her.
You did the right thing. If you had given her the award regardless of her points it would have looked like a clear case of nepotism by the CEO. That would have made him look like an unethical a*s. I hope he understands that your committee made a fair and just decision.
Besides, if Gramps cares so much about it why doesn't he foot the bill for college.
No
A scholarship is awarded for scholarship, and the parameters are made clear when the award fund is set up. If she didn't make the grades, she doesn't get the money. Simple as that. And if the CEO is really fussed about it, why can't he donate some money to help his granddaughter pay her fees?
You, and the rest of the committee, did the right thing, and good on you for resisting the pressure to do otherwise.
