Financial Aid goes straight to the school. You never see it, unless they over pay and then you get the check which is yours to keep.
Stay away from loans...they cannot be dismissed and they will haunt you till you pay them off or die.one missed payment and your credit is history.
Work Study & grants.PELL,SEOG, NDSL, SSL etc all have to be applied for through a financial aid application which you can find online at www.ed.gov or your local institution financial aid office.
I barely got by on what I was able to obtain...better to have a part time job.
Sorry...but to correct a previous post...there ARE loans that can be forgiven. I work in a financial aid dept! Check with the financial aid dept. at your institution because programs vary...
As an example. At the university I work at...loans can be forgiven if you study in certain fields, another will pay for your masters degree if you work in their industry, another kind of loan is forgiven if you graduate with a B average...
Contact the people who know this stuff... your financial aid office. :)
If you want money to live off of apply, the government will never give you enough. The problem you face is the fact that you are applying for a loan without a financial income source. That is really going to be tough without a credible co-signer. Assuming you have an established credit, if you yourself have been employed for the past two years, you should apply to a private educational loan that gives the check to you and you can use the funds for all school related and living expenses.
