They are suing college students.what can they do if you don't pay?Do you have to worry about jail time?

Question:
I read on MSNBC that some recording industry is suing college students across the country for illegal downloading and the use of Ares and Limewire. Some of the students were settling out of court for around $3,000. What if a student doesn't have the money to settle? Would they have to worry about going to jail? I am asking because I am a student too... For most students $3,000 is a lot of money. One guy had to use his college fund.

Answer:
If you don't have the money to pay, they liquidate what assets you have and begin to garnishee your wages until the judgment is paid. . The settlements that happened were small change to the record company, and they aren't doing it for the money. They are doing it to show you they are serious.

A college fund is, by the way, considered an asset and it would be liquidated.
they can and are suing...the 3000 is for an out of court settlement... if found guilty a fine of 750 per download is what they are receiving from the court system... if you are named in a suit it is best to settle out of court.. lawyer bills alone will run that much to defend yourself
Definitely, when you break the law and get caught, expect some penalties, some can be harsh. If you dont pay them the settlement amount, it can get alot worst.
If you read the article again, I think it says that the students that did not pay received a subpoena; at that, only three students received subpoenas. Watch the situation carefully; I predict that very few suits are actually pursued, and no one will go to jail.
