Question:
Hi ive taken an interest into aircraft ever since a child, and always had a strong patriotism towards my country. It's been in my interest for the last 3 years now to apply to join either the RAF or Fleet Air Arm (Naval Air Force). I spoke to some careers advisor's at my local AFCO and sent in my application. Only worry i am now having is. Well am i too tall to get into either of these either as a helicopter pilot (transport) or as a spotter (fighter pilot/local defense)? Im currently 6"1, however they told me i am a suitable candidate due to my intellect. All sciences and Maths at my A levels and ALL my 11 GCSE's at A*-C. Please advise?
I do know it is a tight program to get into and if i cant i am aiming to go into commercial piloting anyway.
Answer:
I'm ex-USN Aircrew in the SH-60B as well as some time in Canadian SH-3 and the Lynx.
I had a number of pilots over 6'1", and one who was 6'4"... I don't think your height should be a problem for helicopters.
Jet pilots have to fit into the ejection seat, and those of us over 6 foot don't always meet the ergonomic measurement requirements.
Good luck !!
